The Lufthansa Group is significantly tightening its grip on the Indian premium long-haul market. In its latest network expansion announcement for the 2026/27 winter schedule, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has confirmed it will launch its first-ever service to Southern India with a five-times-weekly flight connecting Zurich (ZRH) and Bengaluru (BLR). While SWISS is positioning this as a key milestone—expanding its total winter footprint to 88 destinations and introducing its premium “SWISS Senses” cabin product to new markets, for India there is a bigger strategic picture here. This move makes Bengaluru only the third city in India to boast direct, non-stop connectivity to all three of the Lufthansa Group’s primary European megahubs: Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich. Lufthansa group carriers comprise of Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and ITA Airways. Three out of these five operate to India right now, while Austrian and Brussels have operated in the past. This could also pave the way for Austrian to return to India in near future.

For a long time, the full operational muscle of the Lufthansa Group’s hub-and-spoke strategy was concentrated primarily in India’s traditional gateways. With SWISS touching down at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), Bengaluru officially joins an elite corporate and leisure corridor. By bridging this gap, the Lufthansa Group offers unprecedented itinerary flexibility for corporate travelers. A tech executive can now fly out via Frankfurt, return via Munich, or utilize Zurich, balancing schedules seamlessly across a unified ticket and loyalty ecosystem.

Lufthansa launched services to Munich from Bengaluru in 2023, with the original plan being culled due to COVID-19.

Why Bengaluru? Following the Corporate Yields

The decision to make Bengaluru SWISS’s third Indian destination (joining Delhi and Mumbai) is purely data-driven. The city has evolved rapidly from India’s “Silicon Valley” into a broader high-tech, biotechnology, and aerospace innovation hub.As SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger noted, the route is specifically designed to meet the expanding corporate demands of European multinational firms deeply embedded in the Karnataka region. For SWISS, these high-yielding business class cabins are crucial to sustaining a nine-hour long-haul deployment.

Flight Schedule: LX140 and LX141 Operations

The new service will operate five times a week, avoiding the lower-yield mid-week slots. SWISS will utilize its long-haul fleet, timed perfectly to feed into morning banks at Zurich for onward transatlantic connections.

  • LX 140 (Eastbound): Departs Zurich (ZRH) at 13:20 daily (except Mondays and Wednesdays), arriving in Bengaluru (BLR) at 02:55 the following morning.
  • LX 141 (Westbound): Departs Bengaluru (BLR) at 04:50 daily (except Tuesdays and Thursdays), arriving in Zurich (ZRH) at 10:50 the same day.

The timings differ slightly from the flights it operates to Mumbai and Delhi, which land into Zurich around 0615 hours. The A330-300 of SWISS are configured with Eight seats in First Class, 45 in Business Class and 183 in Economy class. A detailed seat map is available on the airline website.

Network Ripple Effects

The addition of Zurich to Bengaluru flight is a massive win for Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2, which continues to position itself as the primary southern gateway for international traffic. For the Lufthansa Group, this pre-empts growing regional competition and locks down premium market share in India’s fastest-growing tech metropolis. From a competition perspective, Bengaluru has the Air France – KLM combination, along with Virgin Atlantic which is scheduled to operate 13 flights a week to London from Bengaluru starting June. When the winter timetable kicks in, South India will finally have direct access to the Swiss Alps—and a direct pipe into one of the most efficient connecting hubs in Europe.
