Gaya Airport made it to the news for its airport code during the Monsoon session of the parliament for its airport code GAY. The airport is all set to host Air India from September 01, 2025. Air India has announced direct flights to Gaya, strengthening air connectivity to one of India’s most significant religious and cultural destinations. The move comes at a time when spiritual tourism is emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in Indian aviation, with the government and airlines alike recognizing its potential.

Flights operate daily and currently with the dual class A320 aircraft, but likely shift to the three class configuration soon as Air India is only a month away in ensuring that its two class A320 aircraft are converted to three class. Air India has informed that this is its 46th domestic destination in its press release.
Air India’s decision to add flights to Gaya is a strategic one. The carrier is not only tapping into domestic demand but also catering to the steadily increasing flow of inbound religious tourists. This move aligns with Air India’s broader strategy under the Tata Group to reinforce its domestic footprint while leveraging India’s tourism potential. For Gaya and Bihar’s tourism industry, this announcement holds major promise. Improved air connectivity is expected to drive higher visitor numbers, not just during the peak pilgrimage season but also throughout the year.
Gaya holds immense spiritual, cultural, and historical importance, making it one of the most revered destinations in India. For Buddhists, it is the gateway to Bodh Gaya, the sacred place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and became the Buddha; today, the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws pilgrims and tourists from across the world. For Hindus, Gaya is equally significant as a site where the Pind Daan rituals are performed for ancestors, a practice that has been followed for centuries along the banks of the Falgu River. The region also holds relevance for Jains, with several sites connected to their Tirthankaras. Beyond religion, Gaya is a cultural landmark, situated close to Nalanda and Rajgir, centers of ancient learning and heritage. Its position at the crossroads of faiths and civilizations makes Gaya not just a city of rituals and pilgrimages, but also a global hub of spirituality, history, and cultural exchange.
Focus on International connectivity
Air India’s flights to Gaya will connect its bank from Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur and the United States. While it looks circuitous there are limited options to Gaya. Thai Airways operates from Bangkok, while Thai AirAsia will operate to Bangkok in winter. Myanmar Airways also operates from Yangon and IndiGo operates to Delhi and Kolkata. IndiGo has tried routing traffic to Gaya via Kolkata but the connections are limited in number at the moment.
