IndiGo opens reservations for flights to Deoghar

IndiGo – country’s largest carrier by fleet and domestic market share, has opened reservations for flights to Deoghar in the state of Jharkhand. The airport got its licence this week from the regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This will be the 74th domestic destination for IndiGo. The airline had conducted trials with an Airbus A320 aircraft on Tuesday, June 07, 2022.

The airline has opened reservations to Deoghar from Kolkata, operated by the ATR 72-600 aircraft. The flight is on sale starting Tuesday, July 12, 2022 and currently selling for four times a week – Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The flights on inaugural day are at different timings. The Prime Minister is expected to grace the occasion and inaugurate the airport on July 12, 2022. IndiGo is widely expected to connect Deoghar to Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai in the coming days – all of which will be with the Airbus A320 aircraft.

Deoghar Airport (IATA: DGH) had its foundation stone laid in May 2018 and seems to have reached its operational stage much faster than many other airports. This is despite the pandemic leading to lockdowns and the work coming to a halt. The airport has a 2500 meter long runway, capable of handling A320/B737 type of aircraft. The terminal building will be able to cater to a peak load of 200 passengers per hour, which roughly translates to just one aircraft per hour. The airport has four bays and one isolation bay, six check-in counters.

Deoghar is located only 250 kilometers away from state capital Ranchi – which also is the only airport in the state of Jharkhand right now. The place has religious importance and is likely to see a lot of traffic in July and August, which is when the Deoghar Yatra takes places and devotees from across the country visit Deoghar. The new airport at Deoghar is approximately 150 kilometers away from the one at Durgapur in neighbouring West Bengal, which has struggled to attract air traffic. Gaya in neighbouring Bihar is approximately 210 kilometers away. The new airport will provide alternative options for residents of Dhanbad who would have three airports in a 110 kilometer radius!
