The last few days have been very turbulent in Indian skies with multiple bomb threats for Indian carriers flying not just domestic but also international. Thankfully all of them have been hoaxes but have led to airliners landing at remote places and being escorted by fighter planes. This puts considerable strain on passengers, airlines, crew and most importantly security agencies – who cannot take any threat lightly.
More often than not, the thought is if this is a trial run to tire the security apparatus or if this is a way to check the response. Indian security agencies have procedures in place to investigate these along with counter measures. News reports have indicated that one minor has been taken in custody, though the threats have continued even after that. For an aviation market which is third in terms of domestic traffic, and growing rapidly with over a 1000 planes on order, it is important that such things are nipped in the bud. While the ministry and other top government functionaries work together, hopefully the investigation authorities are also working at double the speed to find the origin of such cases to ensure that the entire workforce does not tire out due to the hoax calls or becomes a case of those who cried wolf.
As and when the culprits are identified, it is equally important to give out the harshest punishment possible and publicise it widely to prevent others from going that way. It is important that a country and economy as large as ours is not taken for a ride by a few folks who think they can disrupt commerce and life.
