Just a few hours before Friday began, the aviation community was busy tracking Air India’s diversion to Russia again. As hopes of the same plane flying started fading out, all eyes were on how Air India manages the situation, which looked in control Friday morning.
Friday came up with its own challenges. An IT outage across the world led to groundings, ground stops, delays , and other things – manual boarding passes. Many passengers called it out as the first experience for them, and that was possibly the only joyful thing in the whole experience as Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) blanked out and airport and airline staff worked additional hours to clear the rush.
There was another big event, which happened, the certification of A321XLR. The CFM 1A LEAP powered A321XLR has been certified by EASA and all set to enter service with launch customer Iberia. Closer home, IndiGo will receive its own XLR soon, followed by Air India, opening up new vistas. The Pratt & Whitney powered version is slated for certification later. Over 500 XLRs are on order, and airlines have the option to convert some of their A320/A321neo to XLRs.
On the other side of the weekend is the Farnborough Airshow, which will see a static display of Air India A350. Will there be anything more for or from India? The answer is few days away
