Edition 53

The country woke up to the collapse of the roof at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 on Friday. It led to an unfortunate death and injuries. The minister’s were at the site, there was excessive rain and the injured were rushed to the hospital. Yet, this proved that the value of life in this country is very low. This comes within weeks of the horrible tragedy in Mumbai where an illegal hoarding collapsed. Both may not be connected, for the hoarding incident showed that it was illegal while the airport roof was perfectly legal.

However, more often than not the offenders go scot free or so is the image and impression of most people in this country. There are rules in place, which involves preventive maintenance, checking the same, audits and more. From fire safety incidents to structural collapses – every aspect has two sides, one which is to be followed by the entity involved and another which is to be checked by the government bodies and certified.

Incident after incident, the government bodies seem to go scot free time and again. What the politicians need to understand is that they get punished by the people in the next election by not being voted back, while the civil servants are rarely punished. There remains no motivation to keep things in check and many a times a lot of motivation to do under the table dealings – with limited chances of getting caught or being even proven.

A time has come to punish the guilty, but before that identify the guilty – make them aware that they would be punished and thus ensure that there is seriousness in the certification that they do or the audits that they undertake. Let’s hope it is done before a public outrage and outcry.
