The new branding and logo of Air India was revealed last Thursday (Aug 10, 2023). Pretty much on expected lines it evoked mixed reactions and in some cases even extreme ones. The logo unveil was followed by the new livery as well as the new product on board. The first aircraft in the new livery will be the A350 which is expected later this year. The grand event in Delhi created the necessary buzz – be it positive or negative.
Just a day apart, but in 2014 (Aug 11) – the Tata group’s foray into full service in partnership with Singapore Airlines was given a name and a logo. Named Vistara, after Sanskrit word “Vistaar” meaning limitless expanse, the logo which may have resembled a flower but is a star derived from Yantra – an ancient mystical diagram. This intricate symmetrically woven pattern of golden lines represents the divine energy of the universe, adding a spiritual dimension to the logo. The inner section with eight angles, draws inspiration from the wind rose. This symbolises the airline’s far-reaching network, in all directions.
Cut to 2023, almost on the same day when the event was attended by Tata sons chairman unlike the event in 2014. Air India’s new logo symbol is inspired by the peak of the gold window frame, signifying limitless possibilities amongst other things and is named “The Vista”. With Vistara (the airline) set to merge with Air India, Aubergine has made an entry into the aircraft livery and design features which also has deep red and gold highlights and a “Chakra” inspired pattern.
Neither the aircraft is here nor has it emerged from the paintshop? The Chakra of Air India and Yantra of Vistara, Limitless possibilities and vast expanse, and August 10th and August 11th? A set of coincidences or not really? August seems to be “the” month in Indian aviation, with fly91 also unveiling the logo just days ahead of Air India’s unveiling and both IndiGo and Akasa Air celebrating birthdays in the month. Let’s see if August turns out to be the lucky charm for Air India with its new logo.
