On one of the aviation whatsapp groups (I am part of just two), a kind gentleman forwarded some interesting image. It showed the top ten airlines in the world by revenue, passengers, fleet and so on. What caught my eye was the fleet part, where Lufthansa stood at number#10 with a fleet size of 338. Digging a little deeper, I found another source which listed Air Canada at #10 with 354 aircraft, with Lufthansa ahead of that.
On the very same day, IndiGo took delivery of another A321neo; taking its fleet count to 310. From creating records sporadically, like the first airline in India to reach 150 aircraft in its fleet, 200 aircraft, 250 and 300, IndiGo is moving to breaking records regularly. This was the time when the airline would break some or the other record, be it fleet or market share or passenger numbers and this would happen once in a while. The airline is already part of the top 10 airlines worldwide by daily number of departures.
IndiGo has come a long way where it surpasses its own previous best in passengers carried each quarter and sometimes even the revenue, as if the airline is a serial record breaker. As if this was not enough, the airline announced a MEGA order of 500 aircraft at Paris Air Show, a day prior to Air India formalising its order announced in February, thus denying Air India the record of highest orders ever placed in history. In the past, such major milestones were not publicised by the airline, but lately that has changed. Every small and big newsworthy thing is communicated via various mediums.
Over a decade ago, I was told by someone senior working at IndiGo – the goals are small but the goalposts keep shifting and that is how we grow. I have been wondering if there is an Amitabh Bacchan voice guiding IndiGo ” Agla padaav hai 350 jahaj ke liye, kya aap taiyar hai?” This will set another record, but also propel IndiGo in the top 10 airlines by fleet worldwide.
