Zvartnots International Airport at Yerevan is the busiest airport in Armenia and acts as the main gateway and hub for all airlines. Armenia was one of the Soviet Socialist Republics and the airport opened in 1961 with an aim to be connected to Moscow. The airport was upgraded in the 1980s but found it hard to attract investments after the fall of Soviet Union. A consortium renovated and upgraded the airport post 2009. Aviation in Armenia has not picked up well with airlines not being able to sustain for longer. Fly Arna which looked promising went belly up this year.
