to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”

Willie Walsh stands as one of aviation’s most transformative leaders, with a 40-year career marked by bold turnarounds and strategic vision. Starting as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979, he rose to CEO in 2001, rescuing the near-bankrupt Irish carrier by slashing 2,000 jobs, pivoting to a low-cost model to rival Ryanair, and restoring profitability despite union backlash and a 2002 lockout. At British Airways from 2005, Walsh tackled rising low-cost competition from easyJet and Ryanair by streamlining costs, acquiring bmi’s Heathrow slots for long-haul growth, and securing a landmark transatlantic joint venture with American Airlines—eluding prior BA leaders—while navigating the 2008 financial crisis and volcanic ash disruptions. His pinnacle came as CEO of the newly formed International Airlines Group (IAG) from 2011 to 2020, masterminding the BA-Iberia merger and expanding alliances. Since 2021 as IATA Director General, Walsh has steered the industry’s COVID recovery, championed net-zero carbon by 2050, and advocated against infrastructure cost pass-throughs to airlines.
