It is not uncommon for IndiGo to have monopoly operations at a few airports in India, but abroad? IndiGo will launch flights to Fujairah Airport (IATA: FJR) from Kannur and Mumbai, becoming the only scheduled operator at Fujairah, UAE. Flights are open for sale and begin May 15, 2025 from Kannur and from May 16, 2025 from Mumbai. Both flights operate daily.

The aircraft swaps at Fujairah, with one operating Kannur – Fujairah – Mumbai, while the other operates Mumbai – Fujairah – Kannur. This will be the fifth destination in the United Arab Emirates for IndiGo, and 41st international destination as per the airline. The destination is surprising in many ways. The airport does not have any scheduled services and is a base for storing planes, maintenance and repairs.
With this addition, IndiGo will operate 275 weekly departures between India and the UAE. This includes 14 flights a week to Fujairah, 21 flights a week to Ras Al Khaimah, 28 flights a week to Sharjah, 104 flights a week to Abu Dhabi and 108 flights a week to Dubai.
Fujairah is the capital of Emirates of Fujairah, one of the seven Emirates which form the United Arab Emirates. The population of the city is just over 1.2 lakh. The city has a large port, along with facilities to store oil. Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are less than 100 kms away from Fujairah. IndiGo operates to both these airports. The new daily flights from Mumbai and Kannur to Fujairah, with dedicated bus services to & from Dubai and Sharjah, complementing existing routes to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah, will unlock new travel options for tourism and trade, catering to both leisure and business travelers, as per the airline. The road distance to Dubai and Sharjah is roughly one hour each and there could be passengers who may explore this as an option as alternative to flights to Sharjah and Dubai for some benefits, including cost.
Abu Dhabi also has a similar bus service to Dubai, and this strengthens the argument of having more seats to Dubai since the other airports are offering a road connection to Dubai, presumably because Dubai has more demand but fewer flights. While Indian carriers largely cater to the Origin – Destination traffic, Emirates has a higher focus on connecting passengers via Dubai.
For IndiGo, this adds another route from Kannur, where rival Air India Express has a very strong presence.
