Edition 62

Next week, Air India Express was to launch its flight operations to Dhaka, simultaneously connecting it from Chennai and Kolkata with 12 services a week. The plan now stands in abeyance for the geopolitical events that have happened in the neighbourhood since the time the flights were announced and now when it’s time to fly.

This is not the first time, the airline was supposed to connect Hindon with multiple places in the country with 35 weekly departures in August. The flights to Hindon never materialised after announcing them, opening them for sale and then quietly removing them out of system.

While Dhaka was pure bad luck, Hindon fiasco could have well been avoided. Afterall, it was known for long that operations at Hindon were restricted for RCS-UDAN and not for commercial operations. Interestingly, the airline had approvals from the regulator for Hindon flights in its ongoing summer schedule, based on what the regulator has uploaded on its website. Then where did things change? A group as large should have taken due care? Or was it the intervention at the last minute since the matter is subjudice?

I read an interesting quote. “Where did it go wrong?” asked a person who is doing nothing. For an airline growing this rapidly, such events are probably to be taken in one’s stride. Hopefully, there aren’t more such luck factors in store in future.
